HISTORY
Information on the Newlander is very sparse but my research up to now is as follows
The company Newlander Caravans first produced the Newlander Camper around 1975 and production carried up to the late 80s although company house has the business still trading up to 1991. The firm traded from 260 Wincolmlee, Hull.
Toyota Hiace 1 of the base vehicles that was used was first produced in 1967 as a pick up or van see brochure 1 and brochure 2 in 1977 the mark 2 was produced the main difference being single headlights and a more refined cab, the mark 3 came along in 1982 although the mark 2 continued to be produced for a few more years.
There was a mark1 or just called the Newlander first produced, and in 1976 the mark 2 was introduced. My own camper a mark 2 has internal wall boarding of the white vinyl type, at the back of the sink not on view and the over cab bed floor is the wood look paneled board, that I have seen on the mark1 camper. As far as I am aware their where only 2 types, the 2 to 3 berth and the 4 to 5 berth this was achieved by the latter not having the toilet compartment and the addition of rear seating and the kitchen moved to the side, as you can probably gather from this I do need more information so anything no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.
The original coachbuilt body comprised of a softwood frame which was clad on the outside with a hollow section plastic planking I can only find a reference to the plastic on the very first Toyota Hiace Newlander produced and like mine about one year later the ribbed Duralumin that was used on the the roof of the earlier Toyota is now used right through.
My thanks to Martin Watts from Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly's Life in the slow lane feature for the following information
The Newlander body was built independently of the base vehicle and fiited later, hence why most models are not walk through meaning you had to leave the vehicle cab to gain access to the rear body. They used a variety of base vehicles including Bedford CF, Datsun Cabstar,Leyland Sherpa, Ford Transit and Toyota Hiace.
