Camper Tales
If you have your own story about your Newlander
submit it with photographs if possible and I will put it here, with your own
hints and tips or problems.
Marks tale.
Was very pleased to find your
website as I couldn't find much info on Newlanders. It was funny to hear your
Ebay story as ours was not dissimilar: Put a low bid in on ebay as the camper
was only twenty miles away and thought it would go for loads more than it did.
Didn't have time to look at it, leading up to the auction and on Sunday
afternoon I'm handing out my hard earned cash for this beauty!!!!! 1981 Bedford
CF Newlander. Having never bought a vehicle without a really good look over
before I was expecting the worst. However she seems to run pretty well and is
showing 70k on the clock with quite a few MOTs. The body seems in reasonable
nick and I hope will MOT next month. The big disappointment is the rear
interior. We were hoping for a bit more quirky, original camper stuff but the
last guy was told by a mate to rip out the old cupboards and put new ones in to
save weight. He did admit that he was no carpenter. You can't really see from
the photos but the cupboards are wonky, the doors are all different, there’s
different trim everywhere. There was a horrid blue lino on the floor and badly
fitted strange wallpaper everywhere etc... So I ripped it all out
yesterday-probably shouldn't have (rollin' restoration). but couldn't bear it.
Have left the kitchen and bathroom areas as not to bad. The wallpaper removal
has revealed wooden panelling on two walls, which maybe original. there are cork
tiles all around the kitchen area many of which are mouldy due to a damp problem
we have???? We have removed quite a few of them as we thought they couldn't be
original but looking at your van probably are!! Don't like them anyway. Have you
had damp/waterleak problems?? Our roof on the outside looks like a silicon
fest!!! On a positive note all the
electrics appear to be working, there is two leisure batteries. The water pump
and heater are working. The sink, cooker etc are original I think and seem to
work. The cab is pretty cool although the carpet is made up of 3 or 4 different
pieces. Like yourself I would like to restore it with one mind on originality
and one on practicality and cost. Want to go away in a month!!! We've decided to
concentrate on the main sitting/bench area and engine/MOT for now. Giving it a
service today - plugs, points, dizzi cap etc. Nearly stripped all the
wallpaper. Not sure how the wood panelling is going to come up - it's a bit
rough in places. Cannot decide whether or not to remove the right hand bench and
re-design it like the one in the photo. (what do you think?) Our van is the same
as your Hi-ace I think with table in the middle and two long benches either
side. It would be really nice to have a table that could stay up and still leave
a walk way. Could be to much work for now and would like to keep it as original
as pos.
